Sharpe and Merkel partnered in a discussion for the Crescent River Port Pilots’ Association. The subject of the panel was pilots’ duties under the “reasonably prudent pilot” standard as applied in the context of a “two-pilot protocol”. The protocol, intended to maximize safety, calls for two pilots at the helm, one designated as a Navigation Pilot and the other as a Resource Pilot. Together, they must board the ship and serve as a team while the ship is in transit within pilotage waters. The panel discussion led to a healthy Q&A, providing a wealth of information and deliverables. At the close of the discussion, Sharpe and Merkel were invited on a tour of the facility to see real-time action of Crescent River Port Pilots at work.
